February in Primary 6

4th Mar 2025

Primary 6 have continued to work well during February.  In Religion we learned lots of interesting facts and even some legends associated with St. Brigid, who was born in Faughart Co. Louth, a few miles from Cullyhanna.

We thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Taster Day’ to St. Joseph’s High School, Crossmaglen. We got the opportunity to take part in a range of subjects.

In World Around Us we started our new topic ‘Rainforests.’  We have been researching the location, climate, layers and all the different animals and plants that live there.  We are really looking forward to learning more over the coming weeks.

We had a fantastic visit from Una Walsh, from the Rural Health Partnership.  She discussed how different storms affected Ireland over the years.  She compared the similarities of one well known storm ‘Oiche na Gaoithe Moire’ (Night of the Big Storm) to our most recent one ‘Storm Eowyn.’

She also discussed the Famine and the effect it had on Ireland.  We listened to a local story called ‘The Hannah’, a ship that sank after sailing from Warrenpoint.  It made contact with ice at 4am, 49 people lost their lives.

Una also displayed pictures of old stone houses on Slieve Gullion that were deserted by those who emigrated during the Famine.  P6 were shocked to hear that up to 14 people could live in a house of that size!

Well done to all our Pupils of the week, those that met their Accelerated Reader Targets and received certificates in Mathletics.
