January & February in Primary 4

We've had a busy start to the new year and term two in Primary 4.

January

Throughout the month of January we explored lots of new things in Literacy and Numeracy.  We conducted an adjective hunt using our reading books and used dictionaries to help us create our own class 'Adjective Dictionary'.  We worked in groups and used and app called 'Book Creator' to make our very own adjective dictionary.  We explored non-fiction reports to help us with our topic on 'Birds' and learned how to make notes.  In Numeracy we have progressed to 3-digit numbers and have been working very hard on telling the time.  We have also started to learn our times tables and used lots of mental maths games to learn our 2x tables.  One of our favourite art activities was using chalk to create winter scenes on black card.

February

February may be a short month, but it was busier than ever in Primary 4.  At the beginning of the month we learned about St. Brigid's Day & Chinese New Year.  We made St. Brigid's crosses out of coloured pipe cleaners, to represent St. Brigid's cloak & Fr Tremer visited our class to bless them.  To celebrate Chinese New Year we made a lantern, decorated with lots of images from the Chinese traditions for the new year.  We continued our topic on birds and began to research a bird of our own so that we could write our own non-fiction report.  In Numeracy we continued our work on 3 digit numbers and our times tables, as well as the division facts for the 2x tables.  Whilst in Literacy we explored fables and enjoyed the challenge of creating our own fable for our 'Fantastic Fables' wall in the classroom.  February also saw a few flakes of snow and we did our 'Daily Mile' in the snow, whilst during breakfast club some children made a mini-snowman with the little snow that could be found in the playground.

After mid-term we were delighted to have some extra help in our classroom, with Mr Oran Murray joining us from St. Mary's University, Belfast for his placement.  He has been helping us with our daily classroom activities and we are looking forward to him teaching some interesting things about the world around us over the coming weeks.

We've had a BRILLIANT start to the new year/term and have lots of exciting things to come over the next few months, including our First Penance and our First Holy Communion.
