Literacy

This month in Literacy we learned about Anne Frank. We wrote a biography about Anne Frank's life.

Facts  She was born in Frankfurt Germany on June 12th 1929.   Anne’s sister was called Margot.

We learned about the different types of bullying and we wrote poems about bullying. We learned about direct speech and speech marks and we have also learned about clauses. There are main clauses and subordinate clauses in sentences.

We know how to use adjectives to compare nouns and we know how to use adverbs to complete sentences.

We also have been learning about The Amazon River Dolphin.

Facts The largest dolphin is a called the Killer Whale and the smallest is called the Heaviside.

Numeracy

This month with Miss Donnelly we have been learning to add mentally and how to add using the bridging technique.

Example: 245+138. You need to use the hundreds, tens and units columns to help with your adding.

We also learned how to subtract mentally. Example: 390-30=60 and 840-29=811.  We would use our counting back in tens techniques to help us. We also learned how to subtract using the borrowing method.

We learned how to multiply by 10,100,1000. If you were multiplying by 10 just add 1 zero. If you were multiplying by 100 you would add 2 zeros and if you were multiplying by 1000 you would add 3 zeros. Example: 26x10=260, 26x100=2600 and 26x1000=26000.

With Mrs O’Kane we have been learning to identify triangles whether it’s an equilateral, isosceles or scalene triangle. We also learned how to measure the sides of a triangle. An isosceles triangle has 2 equal sides and 1 different side. A scalene triangle has unequal sides and an equilateral triangle has sides that are all equal.

We know that the angles in a triangle add up to 180ᵒ. We learned about right angles, obtuse angles and acute angles. An obtuse angle is more than 90ᵒ but less than 180ᵒ, an acute angle is less than 90ᵒ and a right angle is 90ᵒ. We also learned how to tesselate shapes, tessellating shapes is when a shape fits together and has no gaps in it.

World Around Us- Vikings

In November we learned about the Vikings.

The Vikings travelled to Norway, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Ireland. They made their own clothes made from animal skins and they used shields and swords to rob places. They travelled the seas and looked for places where they could farm. The Vikings came to Ireland and tried to steal chalices.

They lived in interesting houses. They had a fire in the middle of the house. They had a part of their house for their animals and they had lots of beds.  The Vikings had animals such as chickens, sheep and pigs. They produced meat, eggs, milk and cheese for the Viking people to use. The Vikings ate meat, fish, bread, cheese and they drank beer.

World Around us Healthy Living and Materials

We have been learning about the skeleton. We all have a skeleton. If we didn’t we would be a puddle of flesh and meat on the floor. Our skeleton is SUPER important. It helps us move, wave and turn our heads!

We’ve also been learning about natural and man-made materials. Natural materials are wool, sand, cotton, silk, fur and feathers. We can find these materials in nature.  Man-made materials are paper, paint, glass, concrete, plastic and metal.  They have to be made.

We have also been learning about the properties of materials.  For example, if a materials is washable it can be washed.  Materials can also be hard, stiff, firm or flexible.

Other news

Primary 6 had a visit from Una Walsh. Una spoke to the children about how Vikings arrived in Ireland and how they made their way to South Armagh. The children learned that the Vikings raided Killeavy monastery and they learned how flagstaff got its name. We also enjoyed a visit from Kevin McKernan of Abbey CBS who helped us develop our football skills.
