October in Primary 6
World Around Us - The Vikings
This October we’ve been learning about Longships and Viking Clothing.
The Longships were narrow ships made from wood and they were sometimes called Dragonships. On the front of the Longship, Vikings carved a figure to scare off enemies. Vikings put their shields on the side of their ships for extra protection. The men on the ship rowed the oars to get way from enemies.
Most Viking clothes were dull in colour. It was hard to come to by rare colours. If someone had a rarer colour it meant that they were a rich person. Vikings clothes were made from wool, linen and leather. Vikings wore armour and would carry shields. The armour they wore were helmets, shields, tunics, leather shoes, mail shirts and leg covers.

World Around Us - Healthy Living
This month in world around us we learned about the digestive system, the short-term effects of alcohol consumption and about how harmful drugs are.
Fun fact: You can use your teeth to make it easier to swallow food, it breaks the food down. A liquid called saliva also helps food break down. The food then passes through the esophagus into the stomach. There are acids in the stomach which turn the food into liquid.
Fun fact: The small intestine is where nutrients and vitamins are passed into the bloodstream and they are then carried around the body. The rest of the food which was not digested goes to the large intestine and it leaves the body though the rectum.
There are also many short term effects of alcohol consumption. For example, drinking alcohol may lead to sickness or diarrhoea and you might feel dizzy for a while.

Numeracy
This month in numeracy we have been learning how to round bigger numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000. If the number that you are rounding is 1 to 4 you round down and if it is 5 to 9 you round up.
As well as learning rounding, we learned how to double numbers. To double a number means to add the same number twice. For example to double 222 you can add 2+2, 20+20 and finally 200+200. Then add them all up and get your answer which is 444.
Then we learned how to add 3-digit numbers and a multiple of 10. For example 153 + 30 = ?
To solve this you can count in groups of ten counting on from 153,163,173 and then 183.
Then we learned how to add multiples of 10 which is nearly the same thing as adding 3-digit numbers and multiples of 10.
With Mrs O’kane we learned about polygons with 0 gaps and 0 curved sides. Then we learned about the properties of polygons and also if they are regular or irregular. Some types of polygons are squares, rectangles and triangles. Now we are learning about different types of triangles. Some types of triangles are isosceles, right angled and equilateral.
During maths weeks week we went to the small yard and helped the P2s with their maths. We complete a maths exercise circuit with the P2s.

Literacy
This month in literacy we learned about using prefixes as well as putting words in alphabetical order. We also learned how adverbs describe verbs. We learned about the famous author Roald Dahl and we wrote a biography about him which the children loved because he had such an interesting life. We also had an attempt at writing our own playscript of the BFG.
In addition to this the boys and girls also learned about using pronouns in sentences, along with completing a comprehension all about the Vikings. We also recapped on synonyms or should I say spooky synonyms! Synonyms are words that have a similar meaning.
The children of P6 also wrote some fantastic Halloween and Autumn poems. This is my poem.
Vampire
I am a Vampire scary and tall ,
I only come out during the fall.
Only dressed in coal black,
It's only blood that I lack.
I’ll go up to your door and have a knock,
While you’re hearing this you might want to install a lock.
When you hear my knock you will think “ Oh who’s it for,”
But soon enough I’ll have you on the floor.
I am a vampire spooky and tall
If you tell anyone about this I’ll get you all.
