October News P6

4th Nov 2024

Numeracy

In Numeracy this month, we have been learning about polygons and identifying which ones were regular and irregular. We learned about rounding to the nearest 1000 and done work on near doubles and adding 3 digit multiples of 10.

We started to look at identifying different triangles and looking at their properties. Such as a scalene triangle has all different sides and angles, an equilateral has all equal sides and angles, a right-angled triangle has an angle that is 90° and an isosceles triangle has 2 equal sides and 2 equal angles. When we knew this, we started to learn how to find a missing angle in a triangle.

My favourite subject in school is Religion 😊

WAU - Healthy Living

In October, we learned about our digestive system, how food travels through the body and what organs work as part of the system. Some of these include our stomach, small and large intestines and more.

We then looked at the effects and dangers of alcohol, smoking and drugs/medicines. We look at how these can affect our bodies and the negative impact they have on our health.

We finished our topic by learning about our skeleton and the names of the bones in our body. As a fun activity, we got to look at xray’s of the hand and the bones in it and using pencils, black paper, oil pastels and chalk, we created a Halloween piece of artwork.

My favourite part was the skeleton.

WAU – Vikings

We are learning about Vikings this month. We looked at Viking longships which were the ships that would help the Vikings travel to different places. We looked at the different parts of the ship, the back of the ship is called the Hull.

There are shields hung over the side of the ship to act as a guard to stop other Vikings from attacking. There is a pole called a mast that holds up the sail and a dragon head at the front of the ship.

My favourite thing this month was learning about the Viking ships.

Literacy

Throughout literacy this month, P6 have been looking at the author Roald Dahl. We began by looking at a playscript from The BFG and pupils were given an opportunity to write their own playscript based on this story.

Moving on from the playscript, we been to look at the life of Roald Dahl, where he grew up, his family and where he got his inspiration from. We learned about autobiographies and looked several examples of them; pupils were asked to then write an autobiography on Roald Dahl and his life and this is something that they really enjoyed as the finished pieces of writing turned out brilliant!

To get into the spirit of Halloween, P6 were given the opportunity to share their imagination, creativity and ideas by writing a Halloween poem.
