September in Primary Six
World Around Us – The Vikings
In World Around Us we have been learning about the Vikings.
The Vikings came from Scandinavia which is known as Norway, Sweden and Denmark. They left their homeland and went to other countries to farm better materials. Viking Longships could be sailed in shallow and deep water. They attacked countries such as Spain, France, Portugal and Germany. They even got as far as Greenland, Iceland and North America.
Fun Fact:
The Vikings hunted reindeer, elk, lynx and seals. They used their skin for making clothes.

Numeracy
So far in September in Numeracy we have been learning about place value. In our place value lessons we learned how to order numbers, compare numbers and to read and write numbers up to ten millions.
We are now learning how to round numbers up to the nearest 10,100 and 1000.
In our maths topic book we have been learning about lines, regular and irregular shapes and polygons. The different types of lines are intersecting, horizontal, diagonal, perpendicular, vertical and parallel.
So far my favourite lesson would have to be recognising numbers up to one million.
Fun fact:
To round numbers to the nearest 1000 you would look at the hundred digit. For an example 234,673 has the number 6 in the hundreds digit.
If the number is 1-4 you round down and if it is from 5-9 you round up, so for this example you round up and the answer would be 234,700.

World Around Us – Healthy Living
This September we learnt about healthy living in our world around us book. We learnt that the circulation of blood continues all the time, we call this the circulatory system. We also learnt about capillaries, capillaries move gases in and out of the blood. We also learnt our bodies need exercise to keep healthy and fit. When the body is fit and healthy it can prevent you from becoming ill and it can help you to fight diseases. Exercise helps to keep your bones and joints supple.
We learnt about the life processes. We learned about MRS NERG.
Mrs Nerg means:
M: move - even just a little bit
R: reproduce - living things have offspring
S: sensitive - responding to changes
N: nutrition - taking in food
E: excrete – you must get rid of waste
R: respire – living organisms are active
G: grow – it’s all getting bigger
We also learnt about our brain, our heart, our muscles and our kidneys. We know that the kidneys take waste out of your blood!
Three fun facts are:
- Each of our organs have their own job!
- The heart pumps blood all around our whole body!
- Arteries carry blood away from the heart!
My favourite thing to learn about is the circulatory system!! Surprisingly the heart is a muscle!!!
We designed posters to highlight the risks of smoking.

Literacy
This month in literacy we learned how to identify nouns. We know that nouns are naming words.
For example: The box was made of wood. The nouns in this sentence are box and wood.
We read a lot of comprehensions and we learned how to use speech marks.
For example: “Today is a special sort of day,” said Kianna-May.
We also learned how to use idioms. TMhe idiom to let the cat out of the bag means to give away a secret.
We learned how to use plurals and we have also learned about poems and how to identify rhyming words.
For example: The moon has a face like a clock in the hall, she shines on thieves in the garden wall.
The two rhyming words are hall and wall.
My favourite thing to learn about was rhyming words and poems.
With Mrs O’Kane we learned how to identify capital letters and full stops, use nouns in sentences and we learned all about collective nouns. For an example a herd of cattle is used to describe a group of cows.
