Una Walsh came to Visit

4th Mar 2025

P6 had the great pleasure of having Una Walsh in on Friday the 28th of February to talk to them about Climate. Una discussed with the P6’s different storms that have affected Ireland; one in particular which Una discussed was ‘Oiche na Gaoithe Moire’ (Night of the big wind) and also our most recent one ‘Storm Eowyn’.

Una then discussed with P6 the famine and the affect it had on Ireland. We talked about old stone houses on Slieve Gullion and how they have been houses left behind by people who emigrated during the famine. A picture that Una showed P6 was an old stone bungalow that would have been home to a family of 14 people; a mum, dad and 12 children. P6 were fascinated that there were 14 people living a house that size.

We also looked at a local story called ‘The Hannah’, about a ship that sank after sailing from Warrenpoint. The pupils found out that there were 176 passengers booked for the journey and after making contact with ice around 4 O’clock in the morning and how sadly 49 people lost their lives. This was linked with the story of The Titanic and a discussion was had on why they think they haven’t heard of the story ‘The Hannah’ but they have heard the story of ‘The Titanic’.

P6 really enjoyed having Una in and are looking forward to having her visit again.
