Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader
Children in Primaries 4, 5, 6 and 7 are using AR in our school.
Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool designed to meet the individual reading needs of every pupil. It is most effective when the school and home work together to promote individual reading. AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice. This page is designed to support parents in understanding the Accelerated Reading Programme.
How It Works?
1) STAR READER
Pupils take a reading assessment called a “STAR TEST”. This is a computerised reading test which is used to identify the pupils reading age. Based on this reading age the pupils will receive a special score. This is a decimal based score covering a specific range e.g.1.5-2.5. This is very helpful as it helps students select books that are difficult enough to keep them challenged, but not too difficult to cause frustration.
As well as giving each pupil a range to read from, they will also be set a target number of points to try and accumulate in a specific time.
- READ !!
Each pupil will know what range of books they should choose from by the colour bands that the books are grouped in. The books in our library have been separated into these colour bands. Each band is identifiable on the spine of the book. The teacher will let each pupil know what colour band they should be reading. Each day we have 30 minutes devoted to Reading towards our Accelerated Reader target.
- QUIZ!!
Pupils will then take a short quiz on the book and when they answer well to show comprehension and understanding they will receive points towards their target.
- REWARD!!
We give out weekly awards in class to pupils who have reached their targets and special certificates are awarded to pupils who reach their target more than once in our weekly assembly. Pupils who become Word millionaires receive a special Gold Pin to mark the achievement.
Log on at home to view your child’s progress with AR Home Connect. Once in the program, you can view your child’s progress towards targets, points and books read. You can also access AR BookFinder to search for titles of interest. You can only access information about your own child.
